Crafting is still a very viable option for getting ascended armor and weapons. Strikes is super easy way to get ascended gear. It also is a stepstone in to raids and i guess also fractals benefit from you doing Strikes first to learn movements and tactics. Sorry but no, strikes is a horrible way to get ascended gear.

Just go Berserker on every class and everyone would love you in Dungeons and Fractals. You used Fractal Relics and Laurels to get your basic ascended trinkets AKA Berserker rings or Celestial Rings and life was good. There was Karma Exotic armor, Crafting/TP , Dungeon armor and we had about 3-5 ways to get them. Pretty easily set up.
