Recently bought a skoda Octavia 2012 and having trouble with the dpf filter. Been told to take it on the motorway every 2 days to regen it. Is this the only option as the car dealer has had it back to them 3 times now to sought out my problem.
My 2008 Skoda Octavia VRS CR with 172k miles had the three lights on – glow plug, engine and dpf – and went into limp mode. Dealer replaced temp sensor but didn’t help. They tried to force a regen but said the soot level was 47% and it needed to be < 45% to do it.

short trips kill DPF's. yeah that's because it's getting full it will regen more and more often and eventually keep regenning constantly until the DPF light comes on and it needs either chem clean or replacing. essentially soot builds - regen, soot burnt off and % ash left behind im not 100% on the g / ML quantity before it requires outside
If the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) warning light has appeared on the dashboard it is most likely due to an issue with the DPF being blocked. Cars fitted with the DPF are not particularly well-suited for use in short journeys, such as around town. If they are only used in this situation then the DPF can unfortunately get clogged up.

Avoid excessive idling. Prolonged idling is an absolute killer for your diesel particulate filter. None of the conditions required for a DPF regeneration will be met i.e Speed & RPM, It’s also a complete waste of fuel. If you’re waiting in traffic (if you can find some) or at a railway crossing then be sure to turn off your engine.

I would find out from your re-mapper where the base software came from. The VW thread has had many reports of cars doing frequent DPF regens every couple of hundred miles, sometimes with the car going into limp mode. Eventually the RAC came out (via Skoda Assist) and diagnosed the DPF sensor has faulty. The old sensor says "Made in the US" the replacement has a different part number and says "Made in Malaysis". RAC guy reckons that the earlier US sensor was a prone to fail on many Audi's and VW's and that the later sensor is much improved.

Look at it this way. The DPF is more likely to clog up if you don't drive the engine hard enough. You are more likely to give the 1.6 a bit of a good blast, more often, than the 2.0. Therefore more likely to clean it out. So its a choice to be made depending on how you see yourself using the motor.
