When you open up the right pad settings, before selecting the input style you'll have to press start to get access to the advanced settings, which includes being able to put mouse on the touch pad. And yes, the game works really well with the Steam Controller. Its one of the best native implementations of siapi I've seen. To zoom out the camera in No Man’s Sky, simply hold down the left trigger button on your controller. Doing so will bring up the game’s zoom menu. From here, you can select the desired zoom level. Mouse + keyboard is the best way of playing I know. I just don't like controllers, I sometimes have to play PS with my nephews and it's just terrible. I feel ya. Mouse + keyboard is my general go-to, but when it comes to flying games I find that I am better with either a controller or a joystick.
